What is a Miniature Dachshund?
The Miniature Dachshund is the small size of the German badger hound: around 4 to 5kg grown, long-backed, short-legged, and famously bold for its size. It is the breed behind every sausage dog, wiener dog and miniature dachshund Singapore search, and the size named on HDB's approved list (item 19, "Dachshund (Light or Miniature)"), which is why it is the only size we place. Why families pick a Dachshund, and who should not
A Dachshund is what happens when you pour a big dog into a small body. The badger hound was bred to follow its nose underground and argue with whatever it found there, and that history is still visible in your living room: brave to the point of comedy, loud when something needs announcing, and stubborn enough to negotiate bedtime.
What the breed gives back is devotion. This is the sausage dog Singapore neighbours will hear before they see: it bonds hard to its people, burrows under your blanket, and treats your daily routine as the centre of its universe. Owners on r/Dachshund describe them as mischievous, hard headed and food obsessed, always in the same breath as besotted.
Who should not get one: households empty all day, and anyone who needs a silent flat. A calm lapdog household is better served by a Maltese, and an obedience-first owner by a Poodle. We place all of these breeds across our family of shops, so we have no reason to talk you into the wrong dog.

Long-haired or smooth: the coats we actually place
Of the 100+ Dachshunds we have placed, roughly 80% are long-haired and 20% smooth. The long-haired coat carries soft feathering on the ears, chest and tail, and needs brushing two to three times a week in Singapore humidity. The smooth coat is a wipe-down dog: five minutes with a grooming mitt and done.

Wire-haired Dachshunds also exist, complete with beard and eyebrows, but they are rare here and need specialist hand-stripping. We do not place them, and we would rather tell you that than sell you a grooming bill.

Colours, honestly: cream to chocolate, and where we draw the line
We place cream, golden (the red family), black and tan, chocolate and tan, and single dapple Miniatures, weighted towards the lighter creams and goldens because that is what Singapore families ask for and what our lines produce.
One line we will not cross: we refuse double-dapple puppies. Breeding dapple to dapple risks pups born deaf, blind, or with malformed eyes, and Dachshund Health UK is blunt about it. A single dapple with one non-dapple parent carries none of those risks, which is why single dapples are on our cards and double dapples never will be.
The same honesty applies to "rare" colours. Blue and isabella dilutes carry a skin condition risk called colour-dilution alopecia, so we do not place them either. A colour is not worth a lifetime of vet visits. See every Dachshund colour explained before a rare-colour ad charms you.

HDB flats and Dachshunds: the exact rule
The rule, exactly as HDB publishes it: item 19 of the approved small-breed list under the Housing and Development (Animals) Rules 2024 reads "Dachshund (Light or Miniature)". "Light" is a weight class, not a colour. The Standard Dachshund, at 7 to 15kg, is not on the list at all.
HDB allows one approved dog per flat, and keeping a non-approved breed risks a fine of up to $4,000. This is why we made a simple decision: we place Miniature Dachshunds only. Every puppy on our cards matches the list wording, and the AVS licence transfer at purchase reads clean for an HDB address.

The back question, answered before you ask
Here is the sentence some shops hope you never read: around 1 in 4 Dachshunds will have back trouble at some stage of life. Intervertebral disc disease (IVDD) comes with the breed’s cartilage genetics, and UK breed councils publish that number plainly. So do we.
The good news is that daily life can be designed around the back. Keep the weight lean, walk on a Y-shaped harness instead of a collar, put a ramp against the sofa, and make "no jumping off furniture" a house rule from day one. None of this is expensive, and all of it is easier to build in at nine weeks old than to retrofit at four years.
Know the emergency signs: sudden wobbling, hind legs crossing or dragging, yelping on movement. That is an emergency vet visit now, not a wait-and-see. Where our puppies come from
Every puppy we place is a purebred Miniature Dachshund with a vet health check, vaccination records, microchip and breed identification. We do not trade on paper certification, and for a companion dog you do not need it: what matters is the health work, all of which you can hold in your hand.
We are an AVS licensed pet shop and Dachshund specialist, and you should verify that rather than take our word. Curious Tails holds AVS pet shop licence AS24J00046, listed on the AVS public registry. Are Dachshunds allowed in HDB flats?

How much does a Dachshund cost in Singapore?

Breed councils cite around 1 in 4 Dachshunds affected at some stage. Lean weight, a harness, ramps and a no-furniture-jumping rule reduce the risk. Nobody can promise prevention, and we never do. Sudden hind-leg weakness means an emergency vet, immediately.
Should I get one Dachshund or two?
Start with one. Two puppies together multiply potty training, bonding and barking challenges, and Dachshund health bodies advise against buying a second to fix behaviour problems in the first.
Should I adopt instead of buying?
